How You and Your Family Can Prepare For Disaster

Disaster can strike anyone, anywhere, and at anytime. No one is immune to their consequences. You can, however, survive one by being prepared. That means having a disaster plan familiarized with your family and having a disaster supplies kit ready to be utilized in a moment's notice.

General safety rules that will be beneficial during any type of natural disaster.
  • Discuss preparations for emergencies with your family. Emphasize the importance of teamwork.

  • Know the types of natural disasters that are most common in your area and prepare for them.

  • Decide on at least two places for your family to meet in case you are forced to leave your home.

  • If you have pets, plan ahead for how to take care of them in an emergency.

  • Keep emergency numbers by the phones. Teach your children how and when to use them.

  • Make sure you have a smoke detector in each room of your house and test them monthly.

  • Be familiar with any and all escape routes from your house.

  • Have your family practice fire and emergency evacuation drills.

  • Locate the main utilities around your house, such as the electric fuse box, water and gas main, and know how to turn them off properly if the lines have been damaged or if you have been told to do so.

  • Neighbors can be especially helpful during a disaster. Those who have medical or technical training can assist those who are in need of help. Meet with your neighbors and discuss possible plans for emergencies.
