consequences. You can, however, survive one by being prepared. That means having a disaster plan familiarized with your family and having a

General safety
rules that will be beneficial during any type
of natural disaster.
- Discuss preparations for emergencies
with your family. Emphasize the importance of teamwork.
- Know the types of natural disasters
that are most common in your area and prepare for them.
- Decide on at least two places for
your family to meet in case you are forced to leave your home.
- If you have pets, plan ahead for how
to take care of them in an emergency.
- Keep emergency numbers by the
phones. Teach your children how and when to use them.
- Make sure you have a smoke detector
in each room of your house and test them monthly.
- Be familiar with any and all escape
routes from your house.
- Have your family practice fire and
emergency evacuation drills.
- Locate the main utilities around
your house, such as the electric fuse box, water and gas main, and
know how to turn them off properly if the lines have been damaged or
if you have been told to do so.
- Neighbors can be especially helpful
during a disaster. Those who have medical or technical training can
assist those who are in need of help. Meet with your neighbors and
discuss possible plans for emergencies.
