~ How To Survive A Flash Flood ~
Flash flooding can be the result of slow-moving thunderstorms or heavy rains from tropical storms and hurricanes. They can also form when floating debris or ice jam a man-made obstruction and restrict the natural water flow. The water that is being held back accumulates until it begins to flow upstream and flood.

How To Stay Safe During a Flash Flood
  • Evacuate any area that will be subject to flooding, including dips, low spots, canyons, and washes.
  • If you come across a flooded area, do not attempt to cross the flowing streams.
  • Never drive through flooded roadways because the road bed may not be fully intact due to the heavy amounts of water.
  • Be cautious if driving at night since it will be harder to recognize flood areas.
  • If camping, do not park your vehicle near streams and washes, especially if there is a possibility of flooding.

What To Do After a Flood

  • Throw out any food that has come into contact with flood waters.
  • Boil all of your water before using it. All wells should be tested for impurities.
  • If needed, food, clothing, shelter, and first aid are available at your local Red Cross.
  • Avoid disaster areas since you may delay any ongoing rescue operations.
  • Before being utilized, all electrical equipment should be properly inspected.
  • Use flashlights when examining buildings and houses instead of lanterns, torches, or matches because of possible flammable materials.
