PREPARING A DISASTER SUPPLIES KIT

Nothing is certain about what could happen after disaster strikes. Help may come immediately, or it may not come for several days. The best way to be prepared for this situation is to have a disaster supplies kit ready in easy to carry bags in case you and your family must remain at home or if you are told to evacuate. You can greatly increase your chance and your family's chance for survival after a disaster occurs by having this kit prepared.

 

WATER
Keep several gallons of water in plastic containers. Depending on the weather at the time of the emergency, or if you have children or elderly persons residing with you, you will need even more.

FOOD
Store a large amount of non-perishable foods that are compact and require little preparation.
These staples include:

  • Cans of milk and juice
  • Canned vegetables, fruits, meats
  • Soups high-protein foods such as peanut butter, granola, and trail mix
  • Baby food or food for eldery persons if needed.

FIRST AID
A first aid kit is a necessity during a disaster.
Your kit should include the following:
  • Several rolls of bandages
  • Adhesive tape
  • Assorted sizes of sterile adhesive bandages
  • A sanitized pair of scissors
  • Sanitary supplies
  • Antibacterial towelettes and ointment
  • Thermometer
  • Cleansing soap
  • Sunscreen
  • Prescription and non-prescription drugs

TOOLS AND SUPPLIES

  • Paper plates
  • Cups and utensils
  • Battery-operated radio
  • Flashlights
  • Compass
  • Plastic garbage bags
  • Fire extinguisher
  • Utility tape
  • Plastic sheets
  • Shut-off wrench
  • Hand-held can opener and utility knife


MISCELLANEOUS SUPPLIES

  • Sturdy shoes or boots
  • Protective rain wear
  • Extra cash or traveler's checks
  • Hats and gloves
  • Blankets or sleeping bags
  • Important family documents
